Vintage Fur Coat: A Touch of Timeless Elegance from the 1940s
This vintage fur coat, likely from about 1949, is a unique and stylish piece. Crafted from a luxurious fur, probably beaver, or possibly rabbit or fox, this coat offers warmth and elegance.
Unique History
The coat features a label identifying it as “Fashion Furs” located at 1019 E. Superior St. in Duluth, Minnesota. Research suggests this furrier, Arne Abelson, was listed at that address in the June 1949 Duluth Telephone Directory. This provides a glimpse into the coat’s history, suggesting it may have been crafted in the late 1940s.
Luxurious Fur
The fur is a beautiful light brown color with subtle blonde highlights. It is soft to the touch, still has some shine, and provides exceptional warmth.
Timeless Design
The classic design of this coat ensures that it will remain timeless and elegant. The full-length design provides maximum warmth and coverage, making it ideal for cold winter evenings. The coat features three front closures: a top button with a loop and two hooks and eyes. It also includes two outside side pockets for convenience.
Practical Features
The coat features two inside straps matching the lining that are sewn to the inside seam of the right side. You can pull these straps across the front of your body and them them to a loop on the opposite side of the coat. This unique feature helps to keep the coat securely in place and prevent it from shifting. Plus, the inside of each sleeve has a lining with elastic cuffs to reduce air from creeping in, thus keeping your arms warm and dry.
Size
Based on the following approximate measurements, we believe this fur coat is size medium. However, this is only an estimate.
Length (back neckline to bottom) | 39″ |
Shoulders (front shoulder to shoulder) | 20″ |
Back (underarm to underarm) | 20″ |
Underarm (inside underarm to underarm) | 21″ |
Sleeve (neckline to cuff) | 27″ |
Condition
This vintage fur coat is pre-owned but is in fair overall condition. Its former owner(s) thoroughly used the coat, which shows signs of wear and tear consistent with its age. Specifically, there are seven small tears in the fur, ranging in size from 0.25 to 1.5″ long, primarily located on the shoulders and sleeves (see photos for an example of one of the larger tears). Additionally, the burgundy-colored lining does not have any tears but has noticeable age stains. Also, there is a 0.75″ imperfection in the middle of the back. Despite this damage, the coat has a nice appearance overall. We recommend asking a furrier how much it might cost to fix the tears because the coat would otherwise be in good condition.
Hole locations: Front of right shoulder (1.25″), front of left shoulder (0.25″), back of left sleeve (1.5″), back of right sleeve (1.5″), another back of right sleeve (0.75″), another back of right sleeve toward top on seam (0.25″), and upper right back (0.75″)
Support a Great Cause
By purchasing this coat, you’re not only acquiring a unique and stylish piece of clothing, but you’re also supporting a great cause. This vintage fur coat is a unique piece with a touch of interesting history and timeless elegance.
