Topkapi: Vintage VHS Heist Film

This vintage VHS tape of Topkapi remains sealed in its original shrink-wrap, making it a collectible item. Jules Dassin produced and directed this 1964 American Technicolor heist film. Filmways Pictures produced it, and United Artists distributed the picture. The film draws its story from Eric Ambler’s 1962 novel, The Light of Day. Monja Danischewsky adapted the screenplay. The film stars Melina Mercouri, Peter Ustinov, Maximilian Schell, Robert Morley, and Akim Tamiroff. Manos Hadjidakis composed the music score. Henri Alekan handled the cinematography. Theoni V. Aldredge designed the costumes. We received this VHS tape donated new in its original shrink-wrap.

Plot: A Daring Heist

Beautiful thief Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri) and criminal genius Walter Harper (Maximilian Schell) devise a plan. They intend to steal an emerald-encrusted dagger. This valuable item resides in Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace. As part of their crew, they hire small-time hustler Arthur Simon Simpson (Peter Ustinov). They plan for him to act as their fall guy. When the Turkish secret police capture Simpson at the border, they persuade him to spy on his partners. The police mistakenly believe they are Communist agents. They suspect them of plotting an assassination.

Award-winning Performance

The film won an Academy Award in 1965. Peter Ustinov received the trophy for Best Supporting Actor. This marked his second such award in four years. His performance adds significant depth and humor to the film.
