Plot: Betrayal in Dublin
Gypo Nolan, played by Victor McLaglen, is a former Irish Republican Army man who drowns his sorrows in alcohol. He desperately wants to escape his bleak Dublin life and start over in America with his girlfriend (Margot Grahame). When British authorities advertise a reward for information about his best friend, Frankie (Wallace Ford), a current IRA member, Gypo cooperates. Now Gypo can buy two tickets on a boat bound for the States, but he struggles with overwhelming guilt for betraying his buddy.

The Informer was a major contender at the 8th Academy Awards, competing directly in six categories. The film won four Oscars: John Ford won for Best Director, Victor McLaglen won Best Actor, Dudley Nichols won for Best Writing Screenplay, and Max Steiner won for Best Score. This clearly demonstrates its significant critical success.
