Elvira Madigan: Vintage VHS Romantic Drama
This vintage VHS tape of Elvira Madigan remains mostly sealed in its original shrink-wrap. Bo Widerberg directed this 1967 Swedish romantic drama, starring Pia Degermark and Thommy Berggren. The film adapts the tragic true story of Danish slackrope dancer Hedvig Jensen (Elvira Madigan) and her romance with Swedish nobleman Lieutenant Sixten Sparre. We received this VHS tape donated new in its original shrink-wrapped plastic case. The shrink-wrap is mostly sealed, but some is torn and missing on the front, back, and at the four outer corners, showing residue and wrinkling.
Plot: A Fated Romance
Hedvig Jensen, performing as Elvira Madigan, meets Lieutenant Sixten Sparre in the Danish countryside. They fall in love and run away together. Sixten, an army deserter, struggles to find work. The couple faces hard times. Then Sixten meets an old friend who questions his choices, urging him to leave Hedvig before life gets tougher.

The film premiered in Sweden on April 24, 1967, and in the United States on October 30, 1967. Elvira Madigan became Widerberg’s first film to achieve commercial success overseas. Pia Degermark won an award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival that year, highlighting the film’s artistic merit.
