All That Jazz: Vintage VHS Musical Drama
This vintage VHS tape of All That Jazz remains sealed in its original shrink-wrap, making it a collectible item. Bob Fosse directed this 1979 American musical drama film, starring Roy Scheider as an obsessive film and stage director. It is a semi-autobiographical fantasy, drawing from aspects of Fosse’s life and career as a dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker. Robert Alan Aurthur produced this film and also wrote the screenplay with Fosse, though Aurthur passed away a year before its release. We received this VHS tape donated new in its original shrink-wrap.
Plot: A Director’s Frenzied Life
Choreographer and director Joe Gideon, played by Roy Scheider, leads a relentlessly hectic life. He constantly plans for his upcoming stage musical while simultaneously working on his Hollywood film. When not engaged in work, he pops pills and sleeps with a seemingly endless line of women. The intense physical and mental stress soon begins to take a toll on the ragged perfectionist. Consequently, he must decide if his non-stop work schedule and hedonistic lifestyle are truly worth risking his life. The film offers a semi-autobiographical tale, written and directed by the legendary Bob Fosse.
Inspired by Real Experiences
The story takes inspiration directly from Fosse’s own experiences. For instance, he edited his 1974 film Lenny while simultaneously staging the Broadway musical Chicago, which he both directed, choreographed, and co-wrote. Scheider’s character in the film mirrors Fosse, attempting to stage an ambitious Broadway musical while also supervising the editing of a film he directed, which, like Lenny, centers on a stand-up comedian. Furthermore, the film’s title itself comes from a song featured in Chicago.
Acclaimed Direction and Performances
Bob Fosse’s direction receives high acclaim for its innovative style. Roy Scheider delivers a powerful and memorable performance in the lead role. Jessica Lange, Ann Reinking, Leland Palmer, Cliff Gorman, and Ben Vereen co-star, with their supporting roles adding significant depth to the narrative. The film effectively showcases Fosse’s unique artistic vision throughout.
A Look at Show Business
All That Jazz provides an unflinching, honest look at the world of show business. It explores the immense pressures and relentless demands of a creative life, delving into the many sacrifices artists often make. Moreover, it reveals a darker side of fame and ambition, offering a compelling critique.
