Thrift Store FAQs

What is sold at Father Joe’s Villages’ San Diego thrift stores?

Father Joe’s Villages sells a variety of previously-owned items including men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories, furniture, household goods, kitchen supplies and small appliances, décor, books, music and other entertainment items. Our stock changes regularly and new items are placed on the floor daily. The best way to see what’s in store is to visit our locations in El Cajon and Imperial Beach.

Do Father Joe’s Villages’ San Diego thrift stores only sell used items?

While 100% of Father Joe’s Villages stock comes from donated, previously-owned goods, not all of the items are used. We often receive donations of brand new items, items with tags, or items donated directly from a retailer. Stock will depend on recent donations so check back often!

What does Father Joe’s Villages do with donations they can’t use in the thrift stores?

Many items that are not sold at Father Joe’s Villages thrift stores are auctioned in our Daily Household Goods Auction. Otherwise, Father Joe’s Villages works to recycle and donate leftover goods. Additionally, we incur a cost whenever someone gives us items that cannot be sold, recycled or donated. That’s why items in fair or better condition are greatly appreciated!

What types of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, MasterCard, Visa and debit cards.

Why should I shop at Father Joe’s Villages’ San Diego thrift stores?

All proceeds from retail purchases fund programs and services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Father Joe’s Villages provides emergency and permanent housing for more than 2,000 men, women, and children each night. We also offer emergency services, meals, medical and behavioral healthcare, job training, therapeutic childcare, addiction treatment and other critical services. Your purchase supports Father Joe’s Villages’ mission to end homelessness in San Diego.

How else does my purchase benefit the community?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generate about 200-250 million tons of trash each year—about 4.6 pounds per person per day. By purchasing from and donating your goods to Father Joe’s Villages, you’re not only helping your neighbors in need, you’re also preventing unnecessary waste from entering our landfills. Additionally, because Father Joe’s Villages is a San Diego organization, your money will also be staying local to help the San Diego community thrive. Shop local. Support local.

Is there convenient parking at the thrift store locations?

Yes. All of our locations have parking lots directly in front or beside the stores.

How do Father Joe’s Villages’ San Diego thrift stores determine the value or price of items?

All of the goods sold at Father Joe’s Villages’ stores are offered at fair bargain prices. There is a range of factors that influence how we price our items:  quality and condition, seasonality, style, brand and rarity. However, most of our clothing, books and entertainment items are sold at a set price according to their category, depending on the style or type of item.

How can I donate items?

Father Joe’s Villages has several donation drop-off locations and free pick-up from most San Diego locations. Drop-off locations include our Furniture Warehouse, our San Diego thrift stores in Imperial Beach and El Cajon and our Daily Household Goods Auction site. If you would like to arrange a pick-up, please call 1-619-HOMELESS (619-446-2100) or fill out our online donation form. For each donation, you’ll receive a tax-deductible receipt.

Do you sell vintage and specialty items?

We sell most of our vintage and specialty items in our Online Specialty Auction. Our Specialty Auction gives buyers the opportunity to bid on unique and uncommon goods, such as valuable artwork, classic antiques, vintage fashion, cars, and special collectibles.

How can I apply for a job at Father Joe’s Villages’ San Diego thrift stores & donation centers?
