The Train: Vintage VHS War Film
This vintage VHS tape of The Train remains sealed in its original shrink-wrap, making it a collectible item. John Frankenheimer directed this 1964 war film, starring Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield, and Jeanne Moreau. Franklin Coen, Frank Davis, and Walter Bernstein wrote the screenplay, which draws loosely from Rose Valland’s non-fiction book Le front de l’art. Valland documented art looted by Nazi Germany. This film was donated new in its original shrink-wrap.
Plot: A Race to Save Art
The film is set in August 1944, during World War II. It pits French Resistance member Paul Labiche (Burt Lancaster) against German Colonel Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield). Von Waldheim attempts to move stolen art masterpieces by train to Germany. Museum curator Mademoiselle Villard (Suzanne Flon) alerts the French Resistance. Railway inspector Paul Labiche soon gets pressed into service. He reroutes the train, using clever deception. He renames each train station along the way, confusing Von Waldheim.
Inspired by Real Events
Inspiration for the train’s interception scenes came from real-life events. These surrounded train No. 40,044. Lt. Alexandre Rosenberg of the Free French forces seized this train outside Paris. The film brings this historical event to the screen.
Critical Acclaim and Box Office Success
The film received critical acclaim upon its release. It also grossed $6.8 million at the box office. This indicates its popularity with audiences. Critics praised its direction and performances.
A Tense Cat-and-mouse Game
The Train develops into a tense cat-and-mouse game. Labiche works to stop the art from leaving France. Von Waldheim desperately tries to escape with his ill-gotten gains. The stakes are high for both characters. The film maintains suspense throughout.
