This charming set of seven vintage golf plates from the 1930s features humorous golf scenes while showcasing an elegant design. And the set’s excellent condition makes it a desirable collectible.

Key Features

Crafted by Crown Ducal in England, this collection of golf plates is from the Florentine collection, dating back to about 1935. It features a cream-colored base with an embossed floral and fruit design in the same hue. A central, full-color illustration on each plate depicts a golfer and his caddy in period attire. Each plate measures 8″ in diameter and has a unique shape with eight evenly spaced divots around the edge.

Design Details

Each plate’s focal point is the humorous illustration of a golfer and his caddy, in vibrant colors against a cream-colored base. This set includes the following seven plates:

  • Falling Hat: The golfer is captured in mid-swing, with a comical exaggeration of his form as his hat flies off. The caddy, seemingly amused by the golfer’s predicament, covers his mouth with his hand.
  • Swing and a Miss: The golfer is portrayed in a moment of optimism, having just finished his swing and gazing intently into the distance to track the ball’s flight. However, the caddy’s hand gesture shows he’s the only one who knows the ball never left the tee.
  • Walking Along: The golfer, pipe in hand and club tucked under his arm, stares in surprise to the right. His young caddy, smiling broadly, looks in the same direction, their shared astonishment hinting at an unseen spectacle.
  • Loud Noise: A golfer with fingers in his ears and hat flying off reacts displeased to a loud noise on the green, while his smiling caddy shares his astonishment at the unseen source.
  • Ear Play: Each of the golfer’s hands grabs the caddy’s ears, with the caddy’s mouth agape in pain as the golfer’s hat flies off his head.
  • Broken Club (Qty.: 2): The golfer is captured mid-swing, but his golf club is breaking in half. The caddy, seemingly amused by the golfer’s misfortune, covers his mouth to stifle a laugh.

Quality and Condition

This Crown Ducal set of golf plates is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality. The plates are in exceptional condition, free from chips or cracks. The embossed design and vibrant colors showcase the meticulous craftsmanship of the era. The “Crown Ducal | Florentine | England” stamp on the back, along with the letter “L,” further illustrates the plate’s origin. In addition, the stamp identifies it as part of the scarce Type 224 Florentine collection.
