This Borderland CD is Tom Russell’s fourth release for Hightone Records. It follows his highly acclaimed album, The Man From God Knows Where. This album, titled Borderland, presents Russell’s edgiest, most electric sound yet. It features eleven powerful new songs for listeners. He co-wrote two of these tracks with fellow musician Dave Alvin.

Album Focus and Sound

The songs on Borderland examine Russell’s move to the frontier area. He relocated near El Paso and Juarez, which inspired the music. The lyrics also delve more personally into emotional relationships. Specifically, they explore the difficult borderline between the sexes. The music definitely rocks with energy. However, it maintains the strong roots element Russell is known for creating. This balance makes the album unique.

Featured Musicians and Tracks

Gurf Morlix produced the entire album. He also plays slide guitar and bass on the tracks. Andrew Hardin contributes on guitars throughout the recording. Ian McLagan plays the B3 organ. Furthermore, Joel Guzman provides accordion sounds. You can hear Jimmy LaFave and Eliza Gilkyson on backing vocals. This CD includes eleven tracks for you to enjoy. Standout tracks include “Touch Of Evil” and “Down The Rio Grande.” Tom Russell continues to break new ground as a highly acclaimed performer and songwriter.
