Plot: Romance, Deception, and Adventure

Manuela Alva, played by Judy Garland, feels unhappy. She is engaged to Don Pedro (Walter Slezak), her town’s mayor. A circus arrives, and she is enchanted by performer Serafin (Gene Kelly). Serafin, in turn, is likewise smitten with Manuela. The mayor attempts to evict the circus from town. However, Serafin turns the tables. He realizes Don Pedro is Macoco, an ex-pirate in hiding. When Serafin discovers Manuela dreams of Macoco, he adopts the discarded identity to woo her. Unfortunately, he then faces a death sentence for the pirate’s crimes.
