Where to Apply for Shelter or Housing Resources
If you would like to be added to the waitlist for emergency shelter and/or temporary housing or to apply for a match with a permanent housing resource, you can do that through Father Joe’s Villages at the locations listed below. The best way to access these resources, is to visit Father Joe’s Villages in person.

What to Expect When Applying for Housing Resources
1.
When you visit either the San Diego Day Center or the Joan Kroc Center, please bring a form of ID. If you have children, please bring their birth certificate(s). Also, please bring any proof of income (ex. last three months of pay stubs, benefits award letter, receipt of child support, eg). If you don’t have these items, that’s okay. We will work with you to obtain the information needed.

Go up to the front desk and speak with our staff. Our staff will make an appointment for you to meet with one of our Assessment Specialists. This is also when you can pick-up an orange badge to access services like showers, laundry

When you meet with the Assessment Specialist, he/she will ask you some questions about yourself and together, you will complete the paperwork that is needed.

The information that you give during the assessment is private and will be used to match you with a housing resource, as available. If you’d like to stay in one our shelters, the Assessment Specialist will also help you get on the waitlist.

MEAL & LUNCH
PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Franklin Antonio Public Lunch Program offers free warm, nutritious meals to the public 365 days a year. To get a meal the first time you just need to pick-up a “badge” at the San Diego Day Center or the Joan Kroc Center front desk. We recommend arriving in the morning to pick-up your badge before lunch. Once you have an orange badge, keep it with you. You can use it to get meals or to use services like laundry and showers in the Day Center.

FOOD PANTRY
Every Friday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, the drive-thru pantry offers non-perishable foods. It also offers occasional fresh produce, milk and bread.

The Village Health Center is dedicated to serving individuals currently experiencing homelessness, individuals who were recently homeless and individuals who are at-risk of homelessness. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), we see patients regardless of ability to pay or insurance status.

Dental Services
Dentists recommend unique plans. Services include teeth cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, and partial to complete dentures.
Walk-in hours are available Monday through Friday with any of our general dentists. Dental emergencies can often be treated the same-day.
Behavioral Health Services
Any person experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness can speak to one of our mental health counselors or attend our behavioral health groups. We see walk-in clients, but recommend making an appointment by visiting us or calling the number below.

DAY CENTER INFORMATION
In partnership with the City of San Diego and the San Diego Housing Commission, the San Diego Day Center for Homeless Adults offers a safe place to rest during the day, along with other essential resources like restrooms, laundry, storage, showers, mail, phones, fax and access to employment and education services, including a computer lab. Individuals can also meet with case managers to figure out resources in the community and their next steps.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I get a bed tonight?
While we want to help as many people as possible, our housing programs have limited availability. As a nonprofit with limited resources, we cannot always accommodate last minute needs for housing. See Housing above for more information on how we can help. We recommend that you also call 2-1-1 to see what other emergency shelter resources are available to you.
What if my valid I.D. was stolen/is missing/is lost?
None of our programs require that you have current identification. Since having a valid I.D. is important our staff can help you get a replacement.
I’m a nurse or social worker looking for a place for my patient/client to stay. Can Father Joe’s Villages help?
As a nonprofit with limited resources, we are unable to accommodate immediate placement. Please call the Day Center with questions about placement for a specific client. Otherwise, call 2-1-1 for more information.
When is the best time to inquire about housing resources?
It’s best to visit the Joan Kroc Center (for families) or the San Diego Day Center (for single adults) earlier in the day, before 11:00 am on a weekday.
It’s hard to ask for help. Will staff/volunteers at Father Joe’s Villages judge me?
There are at least 9,000 people experiencing homelessness in San Diego on any given day. Homelessness can happen to anyone. You are not alone. We are here to help and will work with you to create a brighter future.
I’m looking for my loved one. I believe they are homeless in San Diego. Can you help me find them?
We understand the difficulty and pain you must be experiencing. Unfortunately, due to privacy laws in San Diego, we are unable to confirm or deny that your loved one has used our services. However, you are welcome to send a letter addressed to your loved one to our San Diego Day Center, where many individuals experiencing homelessness get their mail. Can I eat before picking up my badge?
While we recommend coming early to pick up your orange badge before lunch, you can eat lunch in our Lunch Program without your badge.
I lost/forgot my badge. What do I do? Can I still eat?
You can still eat without your orange badge. Please visit the front desk after lunch to pick up a new one.
I received a temporary ban from services. When can I access services again?
Please visit the security kiosk in the courtyard on 15th St. They will let you know how long you need to stay away and when you can access services once again.
I’m from out of town and I want to move to San Diego. Can you give me housing?
San Diego is currently experiencing an affordable housing crisis and rent is extremely expensive. Please don’t move to San Diego without first securing housing and means to pay your rent. There are at least 9,000 individuals experiencing homelessness in San Diego on any given night, which means that we always have waiting lists for our shelters. We are unable to accommodate immediate placement in housing.
I’m a student looking for information. Where can I go?
As a nonprofit, our resources are limited and our staff is busy helping people in need. Please explore our website and blog for information about homelessness in San Diego, and the programs and services provided by Father Joe’s Villages.
I’m afraid to go the Village. Am I safe?
At Father Joe’s Villages, your safety and security is very important to us. That’s why we have a large team of over 40 security officers on staff. Our Security team is on-site to support clients, staff and volunteers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their job is to:
- Ensure integrity and security of all buildings
- Maintain surveillance of Village properties through security monitors
- Control access to all Village buildings and property
- Conduct crowd control during meal times and special functions
- Clear the building(s) in the event of an emergency
- Ensure that guests, staff, volunteers, residents and clients alike conform to all stated rules and regulations.
How can I leave a compliment, comment or question for management at the Village?

I’m currently experiencing or I’m at-risk of domestic violence. Can you help?
If you are in a domestic violence situation or feel that you are in danger of violence, please call 9-1-1. You can also call 2-1-1 for nonemergency resources for victims of domestic violence and abuse.

Do I have to go to church if I go to Father Joe’s Villages for help?
We do not require that you participate in any religious services to receive help from Father Joe’s Villages. Chaplaincy Services offers spiritual support for all religions, but only at your request.

Who can use the Village Health Center (Clinic)?
The Village Health Center is dedicated to serving individuals currently experiencing homelessness, individuals who were recently homeless and individuals who are at-risk of homelessness.
As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), we see patients regardless of ability to pay or insurance status. We also work closely with other FQHCs as a participant in Health Center Partners (HCP) and a member of Integrated Health Partners (IHP), a clinically integrated network in Southern California.
How do I access the Clinic Patient Portal?
If you are a current patient trying to access our Patient Portal, please click here. If you do not have access to the Clinic Patient Portal, click “Sign up today” on the portal and check your email for an invitation, or ask us for Patient Portal access next time you are in the clinic. The Patient Portal allows you to access lab results, message the clinic, request appointments, view your medication list and request medication refills.
When can I come as a walk-in patient to the Health Center?
The Village Health Center sees a large number of walk-in patients each day. This means we see many patients who do not have a scheduled appointment.
Walk-in patients can be seen in primary care (medical), psychiatry and behavioral/mental health. While we cannot guarantee you will be seen as a walk-in, it is best to come to the clinic at the times below:
- For primary care (medical) and behavioral health:
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:30 am or 12:30 pm
- Thursday at 8:30 am, 12:30 pm, or 5:30 pm
- For psychiatry:
- Every day of the week at 8:30 am and 12:30 pm except Thursday mornings.
