Father Joe’s Villages and God’s Extended Hand to Partner on Future Housing Community
Announcement Made August 12, 2021
God’s Extended Hand, a faith-based ministry in East Village, will be closing its doors on August 13. In anticipation of this closure, Father Joe’s Villages and God’s Extended Hand have formed a partnership to redevelop the site at 16th Street and Island Avenue. It is expected that the new facility will include affordable and supportive housing for those struggling with homelessness as well as an updated space to allow God’s Extended Hand to continue their ministry. More details will come forward as plans continue to develop.
“Creative solutions and collaboration are necessary to address the homelessness and affordable housing crisis the San Diego region is currently facing. Partnerships, like this one with God’s Extended Hand, are the key to creating a future where all neighbors in need have the opportunity to thrive in homes of their own. Together, we can create lasting change and end homelessness in San Diego,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, President and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages.
For almost 97 years, God’s Extended Hand has been a constant presence in the community, providing for the spiritual and physical needs of those on the city’s streets. God’s Extended Hand and Father Joe’s Villages both understand the increasing need for more affordable housing in the community. With limited supply, high demand and low vacancy rates, half of all San Diego homeowners don’t make enough money to meet the region’s cost of living.

“We are grateful to partner with Father Joe’s Villages who will provide the homes needed by those on the streets. We hope to gather the Christian churches to continue the praying and feeding the heart of that Village,” said Father Simeon B. Corona, President of God’s Extended Hand.
