This week, the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) released the City of San Diego Community Action Plan on Homelessness.
We appreciate that CSH consulted with Father Joe’s Villages and other homeless service providers in the creation of this plan.
At Father Joe’s Villages, we have contended for many years that San Diego needs a balanced approach. To be truly effective in solving this crisis, we have to address the immediate needs of those on the streets today while also building out long-term solutions for tomorrow. We are glad to see that this plan comes to the same conclusion.
It is for this reason that we have continued to operate and expand our emergency and bridge shelter programs while also pursuing our Turning the Key initiative, an ambitious plan to build out 2,000 units of affordable and supportive housing for those on our streets.
However, this plan is just one of many steps. Leadership will need to take action now and into the next decade in order to truly address San Diego’s homelessness crisis. We will need strong leaders who have the courage to stick to the plan even when they face obstacles. Father Joe’s Villages will continue advocating for this community and providing the solutions needed to help our neighbors out of homelessness.
