A Hardboiled Detective Classic

The Maltese Falcon is a 1930 detective novel, written by American writer Dashiell Hammett. This compelling tale originally appeared in Black Mask magazine in 1929. The story unfolds entirely in external third-person narrative; it describes only what characters say, do, and how they look, with no mention of their thoughts or feelings. This style is a hallmark of the hardboiled genre, a genre Hammett played a major part in popularizing.

Sam Spade’s Dangerous Hunt

The novel follows private investigator Sam Spade as he quickly becomes entangled in a dangerous hunt. The quest centers around a priceless statuette, famously known as the Maltese Falcon. The story takes place in San Francisco, and it is renowned for its gritty realism, sharp dialogue, and morally ambiguous characters.

Private detective Sam Spade finds himself deeply involved after his partner’s murder sparks the deadly hunt. Brigid O’Shaughnessy, a deceitful woman, hires him, and Spade then encounters ruthless criminals like Joel Cairo and Casper Gutman. All desperately seek the priceless artifact. Spade plays both sides, uncovering many secrets, including lies, betrayals, and ultimately, the truth behind his partner’s killing.

Condition of This Deluxe Edition

This pre-owned book has never been read. Its binding remains tight, a clear sign of careful handling. Most pages are clean and well-preserved; however, there are small edge stains on some page edges toward the front of the book, resembling foxing. Despite these minor marks, it presents a beautiful and historically significant volume.
