SAN DIEGO, CA – November 5, 2012 – The eleventh annual Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving Day 5K run/walk fundraiser will take place on November 22, 2012 at 7:45 a.m. Beginning at the San Diego Museum of Man in Balboa Park, this year’s race offers a new course route in partnership with the San Diego Zoo. All participants will receive a coupon for $5 off admission to the Zoo on any day from November 19 through November 22, 2012. Registration also includes a commemorative T-shirt, a complimentary continental breakfast, a complimentary post-race beer garden, and live entertainment. Father Joe’s Villages will announce the winners of its Luxury Motor Home Raffle during post-race festivities at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. “Proceeds from the Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving Day 5K represent a critical source of support for this organization’s programs,” said Sister Patricia “Tricia” Cruise, president and CEO. “These are programs that help homeless individuals regain their self-sufficiency—from children and families to adults and military veterans. Each registration truly is an investment in the future of San Diego.”
Last year over 10,000 community members participated in Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving Day 5K. The 5K course is walker and runner friendly. Wheelchairs, strollers, and pets on non-retractable leashes are welcome. The race starts and finishes in Balboa Park. This year’s new route goes past the zoo for optimal road space. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group. Blue Rockit Band will perform live at the finish line.
Post-race event offerings include free Stone Brewery beer, Pierre’s Café breakfast sandwiches, Bill Magee Blues Band, and homemade pies from the students of St. Vincent de Paul Village’s Culinary Arts program. Ten-inch pies are available for $15 each and a variety pack of six mini pies goes for $20.

ABOUT FATHER JOE’S VILLAGES/ST. VINCENT DE PAUL VILLAGE
As Southern California’s largest residential homeless services provider, Father Joe’s Villages and partner agency St. Vincent de Paul Village have been empowering people to achieve self-sufficiency for over 62 years. What started as a small chapel serving San Diego’s impoverished has grown into a cutting-edge provider of innovative housing programs and services. Father Joe’s Villages and St. Vincent de Paul Village prepare up to 4,000 meals and provide a continuum of care to nearly 1,500 individuals every day—from infants and adolescents to adults and seniors. This includes over 200 children and over 200 military veterans. As industry thought-leaders, the two agencies offer innovative solutions to address the complex needs of the homeless, regardless of age, race, culture or beliefs. The organizations’ primary goal is to transform lives and end the cycle of homelessness. To this end they provide housing, healthcare, food, clothing, education, job training and child development in an internationally modeled “one-stop-shop” approach. The organizations’ mission is made possible only through the efforts of compassionate staff, dedicated volunteers, and generous public and private donors.
