Father Joe Carroll
A Legacy of Compassion and Service
When Father Joe Carroll became President of St. Vincent de Paul Center in 1982, it was a small operation with a daily lunch line and thrift store. But Father Joe had a larger vision in mind: an organization that provided all the services a neighbor would need to transition from life on the streets to stable housing and independence. He called it a “one-stop shop” approach to rehabilitation.
In 1987, Father Joe realized his vision with the opening of the Joan Kroc Center, a transitional housing program that also included a health clinic, job training, day program, dining hall and childcare – all under one roof. The innovative approach pioneered by Father Joe would eventually be replicated across the country as the “continuum of care” model of homeless service delivery.
Today, Father Joe’s Villages is Southern California’s largest residential homeless services provider. The multi-agency organization prepares up to 4,000 meals and provides a continuum of care to more than 1,200 individuals every day. This includes over 200 children and over 200 military veterans. As an industry thought-leader, Father Joe’s Villages offers innovative solutions to address the complex needs of the homeless, regardless of age, race, culture or beliefs. The organization’s primary goal is to transform lives and end the cycle of homelessness. To this end it provides food, clothing, housing, healthcare, education, job training, child development and more. Father Joe’s Villages has partner agencies in both San Diego and Riverside Counties.
In April of 2011, after nearly 30 years as President and CEO, and on the occasion of his 70th birthday, Father Joe Carroll transitioned to the title of President Emeritus. In his new role, Father Joe has stepped back from administrative duties to focus all his energies where he is most needed: fundraising for the Villages.
For more than three decades, Father Joe Carroll selflessly and tirelessly served our community. In that time, he was the voice of, and advocate for, the homeless population throughout Southern California. Father Joe’s contributions toward bettering the lives of our neighbors in need are truly immeasurable.
Father Joe’s Villages is now and will always remain committed to carrying on this great legacy.
